Fall

Here it is! At long last, summer ended. In a few days we’ll have Halloween, Thanksgiving and then we’re off for holiday season, the best part of the year. And sometime between all that, Samuel will be born and change our lives forever.

A few days ago a friend from work gave us a bag of chestnuts she had picked in the country. And today being cooking day, and a nice autumn day, we couldn’t let the opportunity pass… chestnut stew! Here’s the list (serves four):

  • 1 small onion
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • 1/2 red pepper
  • 6oz smoked chorizo (red sausage)
  • 1 coffee-spoon of each: cumin, clove, black pepper, pimentón (smoked paprika)
  • 2 leaves of bay
  • 2 pinches of salt
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 quart of water
  • 2 lb. of pinto beans (soaked in water since the night before)
  • 1 lb. of peeled chestnuts

Sauté the onions, garlic and pepper with the directly in the pressure cooker (we have a 2 gallon Kuhn Rikon and can’t speak good enough about it). Add the chorizo (shredded) and the pimentón. Stir for a minute or so and put in the chestnuts, beans, the spices and the water. Close the cooker and pressure boil for 18 minutes. Voila!

We’ve also roasted sweet potatoes with honey as a side dish. Yummy!

There’s only one thing missing for a perfect autumn day: New England

The Human Connectome Project

This is, in my opinion, one of the most interesting big-science projects going on right now.

The Human Connectome Project (HCP) is a project to construct a map of the complete structural and functional neural connections in vivo within and across individuals. The HCP represents the first large-scale attempt to collect and share data of a scope and detail sufficient to begin the process of addressing deeply fundamental questions about human connectional anatomy and variation.

It’s a multinational project with collaborators in the U.S, U.K., Germany, Switzerland, Australia.

Check out this TED talk on the subject by MIT’s Sebastian Seung:

Modern neuro-imaging is wicked cool.

A kid and his dad send an HD camera to the stratosphere. This just made my week :-)

It is extraordinary to me that the idea of buying dollar bills for 40 cents takes immediately to people or it doesn’t take at all. It’s like an inoculation. If it doesn’t grab a person right away, I find that you can talk to him for years and show him records, and it doesn’t make any difference. They just don’t seem able to grasp the concept, simple as it is.

Here’s a very good WealthTrack interview with one of my favorite investors: Bruce Berkowitz, manager of Fairholme Funds:
